VR “Virtual Reality” is part of the services and technologies that we make available for our fantastic products!
But how does Virtual Reality work in Professional Driving Simulators?
Let's see some details in this article…
How Virtual Reality Works in Professional Driving Simulators
Virtual reality in driving simulators is a technology that allows you to immerse yourself in a virtual environment that reproduces the realistic conditions of driving a vehicle.
Through a dedicated viewer, the driver can see in three dimensions the landscape, the road, the traffic, the signs and other elements that characterise a driving situation.
The headset is connected to a computer that generates 3D images and to a moving platform that simulates the movements and vibrations of the vehicle. The driver can also interact with the simulator via a steering wheel, pedals and other controls.
Advantages of using Virtual Reality on Driving Simulators and Applications
There are gods Practical advantages in the use of virtual reality in driving simulators, especially for training drivers, but not only. Here are some:
- Learn and improve driving techniques safely and without risking accidents or damage to the real vehicle;
- Experience different driving situations, such as traffic, weather conditions, emergencies, particular maneuvers;
- Receive immediate and personalized feedback on driver performance, highlighting errors and areas for improvement;
- Reduce training costs and times, compared to driving on the road, thanks to the possibility of repeating exercises and choosing the level of difficulty.
VR technology can be very useful in the following applications:
- Pilot training for specific circuits, difficult weather conditions, and in general to prepare any type of race and competition with predefined conditions;
- Immersive Driving Experiences, with the ability to create 3D advertising, particularly useful for companies that want to create engaging brand experiences;
- Driving Simulation for Driving Schools, with the possibility of creating the conditions for a real driving test to acquire a driving license.

Risks and Legal and Ethical Implications for Virtual Reality
VR technology has several applications in healthcare, education, gaming and sports, but also some legal and ethical implications.
There are no specific and univocal international regulations to regulate the use of virtual reality in driving simulators, but it is important to be aware that the sensations and reactions experienced during the simulation may not correspond to the real ones. Therefore, one should not rely exclusively on the virtual experience to learn or improve one's driving skills.
It is also right that those who use a driving simulator are informed of the possible risks and contraindications deriving from prolonged or inappropriate use of virtual reality, such as motion sickness, disorientation, loss of contact with reality, alteration of the perception of time and space.
What is the Motion Sickness?
Motion sickness in driving simulators is a feeling of unease that can affect some people when using a VR headset.
It occurs when the eyes tell the brain that the user is moving in virtual reality, but the body is sitting in a chair or standing. This creates a dissonance between visual perception and vestibular perception, which regulates balance and sense of direction.
Depending on the person, but also on the experiences and the VR headset used, sensations such as nausea, headache, sweating, vomiting or hypersalivation may occur.
At ESTech we adopt safety and prevention measures to reduce contraindications, also with specific training.
